In June of 2014, College Avenue made the decision to stop watering the church lawn, install drip irrigation for the trees, and cover the area with free wood chips from a local tree-trimming service.
Our decision was in response to the ongoing drought in California. We could no longer justify using so much of our community’s limited water to keep our lawn green.
This concern was a matter of environmental justice, rooted in the gospel’s mandates to love our neighbor as ourselves and to practice good stewardship of the earth’s resources. As Psalm 24 says, “the earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world and those who live in it.”
We must be committed to caring for the earth’s resources and using them equitably for the sake of the world!
