Five Wishes Class

Five Wishes Class

Sundays, April 10 and 17, 3pm – 4:30pm

April 16th is “National Decision Day.” We are inviting people to talk among themselves as family and friends about what would they want for their medical care if they could no longer make decisions for themselves.

For many people this conversation is a challenging one, yet it is a necessary one. One way of looking at it is what would you want done if you were in a car accident, severely injured and unconscious and not able to tell anyone what you want? Do you want CPR done if your heart stops? If you are in a coma, who would you want to make decisions for you? If you have a massive stoke, would you want to be artificially fed? For some people, these questions bring up spiritual and ethical questions.

Chaplain Erin King from Community Hospice will facilitate discussions about what is involved to make these decisions. Using the “5 Wishes” booklet, we will explore:

  1. Who do I want to make care decisions for me when I can’t.
  2. What kind of medical treatment do I want or don’t want.
  3. How comfortable do I want to be in regards to pain control.
  4. How do I want people to treat me.
  5. What do I want my loved ones to know.

By the end of the April 17th session, you will have a completed legal document expressing who and what you want.

These 2 sessions are open to the community. Contact Chaplain Erin for more information at kingerine@gmail.com.

Holy Week 2014

Holy Week – Sunday, April 13 to Sunday, April 20                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   During Holy Week, we recount the final events in the life of Jesus, ending with his execution for proclaiming a radical message inviting all to live God’s dream of a Kingdom where forgiveness, compassion, and self-giving replace the ways of judgment, power, and division.

Palm Sunday Service – Sunday, April 13, 10am. Before the service we gather outside the sanctuary around a giant street-puppet of Jesus. To remember Jesus’ triumphant march into Jerusalem on the final week of his life, the young people follow behind Jesus leading us in a procession around the youth building, up the sidewalk, and into the sanctuary to continue our worship service.  Childcare provided.

Maundy Thursday Service – Thursday, April 17, 7:30 pm, Sanctuary.  Come and celebrate Jesus’ institution of a special meal to help us connect to God and each other in one Spirit, and a ritual of foot washing to help us remember Jesus’ command to love one another. Pre-worship Taize music begins at 7pm.

Multi-Church Good Friday Noontime Service – Friday, April 18, 12:15pm,  First United Methodist Church, 16th and I Sts. Several area churches remember the story of Jesus’ arrest, trial, and crucifixion.

Good Friday Candelight Tenebrae Service – Friday, April 18, 7:30 pm, Sanctuary.  In this dramatic candle-light service that ends in darkness, we reflect on the story of Jesus’ arrest, suffering, and death on a cross. Several local churches will participate with us in this service, joining our choir for special music.

Easter Sunrise Service – Sunday, April 20, 6:30 am, Church front lawn.  This simple service led by Sandy Sample celebrates the resurrection of Jesus and resurrection in our own lives.

Festival of Gifts!

OUR ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF GIFTS RETURNS!

Children/youth ages 3 – 15 are invited to create handmade gifts for people they love!

Following a simple lunch (in a surprise location), a variety of gift projects will be available as well as a gift-wrapping station.

Families need to sign their children in, leave the scene so secrets can stay secret, and pick children up promptly at 1:15.

To volunteer to offer a gift project, assist in another way, help with set-up or clean-up, or to have your questions answered, check in after worship on 11/27 or 12/4, or call Patti Canoles or Judy Brown (call office at 522-7244 for home phone numbers).
