Dear College Avenue Friends,
Last week someone asked me who we’re taking back the church from in our “Take-Back-the-Church Luau” this Friday. “Who has it?” the person wanted to know. Maybe you have the same question.
Well, the name of our Luau is a tongue-in-cheek way of saying that we’ve all felt the need to renew our commitment to our call by God to do some amazing things together here on College Avenue and in the world. This renewal has actually been occuring since January when we began experiencing a new sense of energy and purpose following a budget crisis and a conflict. From a time of pain has come a time of healing and growth.
First we approved a No-Change Budget because we were determined to fully finance all of our ministries. Then we celebrated our life together with an intergenerational Sync and Drag show to raise money for our Student Ministries Program. In April we worked on improving our communication with the Healthy Congregations Forum. In May we invited the community to a stunning Art and Quilt Show on our campus. Through all of this our leaders and I have worked hard together.
As our congregation continues this amazing renewal, it’s time to formally celebrate what we are called to do and be. Friday’s Luau will begin with a ceremony of renewing my call as pastor and and our call as a church. Rob and I will also formalize the covenant we’ve written together as partners in ministry. Then we’ll celebrate with a festive meal and some whimsical activities. The evening will end with an optional campfire and camp-out.
Come and celebrate our call to be a dynamic community of faith!
